Propellers

In the late February 2021, we started with a propeller design for our jet-cart project, including testing multiple designs to suit to provide us with sustainable source of those for 5-20k rpm EDFs and gimbals. Project started with a 3D design in OpenSCAD, iteration of tests on multiple blade and pitch configurations, material and testing and finished with very stable product which we can produce in numbers with confidence.

Project stretched over 6 months and while it is closed its status allows us to move quickly forward with new prototypes, if needed. Following goals were met:

  • Numerous propeller configurations designed and tested under different speed and power conditions
  • A propeller test bed was designed and employed to quickly evaluate propeller’s parameters
  • PLA and ABS materials were tested for printing and print stability (ABS selected)
  • Propeller design was parameterised to allow its quick changes and production
  • ABS smoothing technique with Acetone got implemented to improve air flow
  • Understanding of ESCs (electronic speed controllers) and how they operate (calibration sequence, limits, orientation, flashing)
  • Power characteristics of RC motors and their management
  • UART Interaction between Arduino -> ESC and motor
  • Duct designs and their structural stability
  • Propeller test plan and comparison methodology

Future goals:

  • Scale up
  • 3D printing with metallic or carbon-fibre-based materials
